The Head of Government, Xavier Espot, qualified the celebration of the XXVII Ibero-American Heads of State and Government summit as a “great success” hosted on Wednesday April 21st in Soldeu, Andorra. He expressed this sentiment during the press conference following the plenary meeting in which the Ibero-American Secretary General, Rebeca Grynspan, and the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, also participated.

Espot showed himself to be completely satisfied with the results of the Summit with the final declaration, the engagements reached and the 16 special announcements that had been agreed upon. He recalled that under Andorra´s mandate a total of 21 preparatory meetings had taken place and the meeting of Environmental Ministers was recovered, after 11 years without one. Espot highlighted with special emphasis the agreements referring to economic and social recovery stemming from the pandemic, always through the prism of sustainability, through the Sustainable Developments Objectives and the 2030 Agenda.

With the adopted agreements, the head of Government stated that “we are advancing towards a unanimous and common international response” through multilateralism. In this sense, he underlined the collective call made by all the countries in the Ibero-American space to reach universal access to vaccines against COVID-19. Espot also remarked that the declaration includes a request to the international community and the pharmaceutical industry to “face the pandemic in a global and equitable manner”.

Lastly, the Head of Government stated once again that it had been “an honor” for Andorra to host the XXVII Ibero-American Summit as well as an “opportunity and a challenge”, as the country had never hosted an international event of these characteristics.

In her intervention, Grynspan pointed out that “never” had a summit been celebrated with this much participation by member states. “It has been a complete success: in manner, attendance and substance”. Moreover, Abinader expressed similar sentiments and insisted that under the mandate of the Dominican Republic they will continue with the work achieved so that the 2030 decade will not be a loss of time in the fight against climate change.
